Rishikesh, Yoga capital of the worldEvery year there appears a new workout routine and others are forgotten, but no exercise program is as enduring as yoga, which has been practiced for over 5000 years. Yoga ensures not only that you burn calories and improve your muscle strength, it also helps you to relax and concentrate, and you obviously will become a lot more flexible.

The literal translation of the word yoga is union, the goal of all the different forms of yoga is dispelling the illusion that you are only your body, and experiencing the unity of all of existence. There are many different forms of yoga, but they all reinforce the connection between the body and the mind. Hatha yoga is the most common form of yoga, it mainly consists of the adoption of different postures (asanas) and breathing exercises. The word hatha describes all forms yoga in which certain postures are adopted. Many of the modern different forms of yoga can be described as hatha yoga.

Yoga in Dhampus. NepalThe adoption of asanas is only one part of yoga, other things included in yoga are cleansing rituals (shatkrya), hand positions (mudras), breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation. Hatha yoga prepares the body for the achievement of yoga, union.

The goal of yoga is not the physical exercises in itself, but it’s more about understanding how the body works, and using the postures (asanas) to direct your energy in a specific direction. The physical exercises of hatha yoga will make you more muscular and your immune system will improve.

Practicing yoga asanas ensures that you will obtain your natural good health by removing the toxins that have accumulated in your body, dissolving the tension in your muscles and making your back more supple. When you adopt the different asanas your back will mainly be stretched and relaxed. The spine is the place in your body where all your nerves run that connect the organ systems to your brain. When the spine is stiff and strained, the nerve impulses cannot flow smoothly through the spine making your organ systems prone to disease. If you keep your spine supple, your nerves remain strong and will keep you healthy.

Wise words from MoojiI started with yoga in 2013, when I took classes together with my wife Debby in Varkala, South India. Our teacher there was Vasudev and he taught at Vasudevs Yoga Shala. Since then we have had a few more lessons from various teachers, but the most important thing is to keep practicing it for yourself.

Yoga is a good activity to pratice if you want to improve your health, it’s best when you can combine it with some light aerobic activity such as walking, cycling or swimming.

In the menu you can find several articles in which I give you more information on yoga and meditation, and some exercises that you can try at home.
Thai massageThai massage, also called Thai yoga massage is an ancient technique of massage based on acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic medicine and yoga postures. The founder of Thai massage was the Ayurvedic doctor Jivaka Kumar Bhacca (see logo Thai Traditional Medical Society). He came from India and lived at the time of the Buddha (2500 years ago). In many ancient writings of those times he is praised for his medical knowledge, and for the treatment of many important people of that time, including the Buddha himself.

During a Thai massage you work contrary to a Swedish massage not only on the muscles. The philosophy behind Thai massage focuses on energy points and lines in the body called Sen. During a Thai massage the therapist stretches the client while simultaneously applying pressure on the Sen points and lines. The use of these Sen points and lines can also be found in some forms of Western physical therapy like manual therapy and myofascial techniques.

Logos massageIt’s the combination of stretching the body, meditative relaxation and the work on the Sen point and lines that make a Thai massage so effective. A Thai massage is normally given on a mat on the floor and the client can wear loose fitting clothes. The massage therapist will not only use his hands to stretch the body, but also his feet and elbows.

This form of massage is effective in dissolving muscle tension, and this effect can be noticed even the day after. By stretching the client in many different yoga postures, a Thai massage has the same beneficial effect on the body as a yoga session. It promotes blood circulation, stimulates the lymphatic system and it stimulates digestion. The removal of toxins from the body due to the improved circulation and by stimulating the nervous system your immune system gets stronger. And a Thai massage is off course a great way to reduce stress due to its relaxing effect.

Swedish massageSwedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology, unlike all the Eastern massage techniques. The term Swedish massage is particularly common in Dutch and English speaking countries, in other countries is mostly referred to as classical massage. The term Swedish massage is derived the mistaken assumption that the Swedish gymnastics teacher Pehr Henrik Ling is the founder of this massage technique, it appears that it was a Dutch person who first introduced the words to describe the various techniques used with this type of massage.

During a Swedish massage, the techniques mostly used are effleurage (stroking movement), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (short strikes) and friction. The massage therapist uses massage oil during a Swedish massage in order to reduce the resistance of the skin. During a Swedish massage, the body is completely covered with towels and the only part exposed is the part on which the massage therapist is working on.

Logos massageA Swedish massage is a good way to provide relaxation and after the treatment you will be completely relaxed and yet not tired, which can sometimes be the case after a Thai massage. It’s also a good way to release tension in the muscles and solve blockages in the body. In addition, Swedish massage stimulates blood flow, causes increased oxygen levels in the blood, helps the body in disposing built up toxins, improves flexibility and it reduces stress (physical and mental).

Foot reflexologyReflexology is a massage technique in which you apply pressure to the reflex zones on the feet and hands to provide a deep relaxation and to stimulate the body’s own healing processes. Reflexology is a natural and safe way of massage that stimulates your immune system by clearing toxins from your body and it calms your mind.

The theory on which the reflexology treatment is based, assumes that all parts of the body are connected to specific reflex points on the hands and feet. By stimulating these reflex points you can trigger a reaction in the corresponding body part. Thus, by massaging only the feet you can stimulate the whole body.

During the times of the Egyptian Pharaohs (4500 years ago) they were already using reflexology techniques. There are paintings in the tomb of the Egyptian physician Ankmahor that depict two patients receiving a foot reflexology massage. Ankmahot was one of the most influential people of those times in Egypt.

Logos massageThe feet are the furthest away from the heart and therefore the blood circulation tends to stagnate in the feet. Especially when the calf muscles don’t pump the blood properly through the body. Foot reflexology stimulates the blood flow and helps to prevent diseases such as trombosis.

For receiving a foot reflexology massage you can sit in a chair with a footstool to rest one of the legs on. The legs should be exposed till above the knee because the legs are also massaged during a foot reflexology massage.
